The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched five new initiatives to improve Aadhaar services. These updates aim to make authentication easier, strengthen security, and support digital governance. The announcements were made at the Aadhaar Samvaad event in Kolkata on September 29, 2026.
- Face Authentication for the Electronic Public Distribution System (ePDS)
- Launch of SWIK Portal 2.0 for Aadhaar authentication approvals
- Introduction of the Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework
- New Token Management System for UIDAI offices
- Revamped UIDAI website with multilingual support and a career portal
What is Face Authentication for ePDS?
UIDAI, along with the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the National Informatics Centre, introduced face authentication for the Electronic Public Distribution System. This contactless and consent-based method provides beneficiaries an alternative to fingerprint authentication, especially useful when fingerprint scanning is difficult. States and Union Territories can now integrate this feature into their ePDS systems to improve beneficiary verification.
How does SWIK Portal 2.0 improve Aadhaar authentication?
The SWIK Portal 2.0 streamlines the approval process for Aadhaar authentication under the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance framework. Eligible non-government entities can submit proposals for permissible use cases directly through this portal to the concerned Ministry or Department, making the process more efficient and transparent.
What is the Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework?
This new framework allows government and eligible other-than-government entities with low-volume authentication needs to use the authentication infrastructure of an existing Authentication User Agency (AUA) or KYC User Agency (KUA). This reduces the need for setting up their own infrastructure, enabling faster onboarding while maintaining security, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
What is the purpose of the new Token Management System?
The Token Management System is designed to simplify visits to UIDAI state and regional offices. It helps residents manage appointments and services efficiently, reducing wait times and improving overall convenience when accessing Aadhaar-related services.
What changes were made to the UIDAI website?
The UIDAI website has been redesigned to better serve residents' needs. It now supports 13 languages, including English and Hindi, with plans to expand to 23 languages soon. The website structure focuses on four main user needs: understanding Aadhaar, accessing services, finding documents, and seeking assistance. Additionally, the new UIDAI Career Portal allows users to apply online for deputation opportunities.
Why are these updates important?
Minister of State Jitin Prasada highlighted Aadhaar as a critical part of India's growth, helping with service delivery, financial inclusion, and ensuring government benefits reach the right people. UIDAI CEO Saurabh Vijay emphasized a resident-centric approach, while Deputy Director General Vivek C Verma noted that these initiatives respond to evolving technology, privacy, security, and convenience needs.
Overall, these five initiatives aim to expand authentication options, improve access to UIDAI services, support eligible entities, and enhance the digital experience for residents across India.
