India has organized a large event to showcase developments in artificial intelligence (AI). The event includes an Expo and a Summit, with many countries, companies, and experts participating to discuss AI's future impact.
India has hosted a major international event focused on artificial intelligence, or AI, in 2026. The event took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and lasted for several days. It included the India AI Impact Expo and the India AI Impact Summit. The Expo and Summit brought together many countries, companies, and experts to share ideas and explore new AI innovations.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, officially opened the event on February 16, 2026. The inauguration marked the start of a five-day gathering that ended on February 20. The Expo was held at a large venue covering over 70,000 square meters, spread across 10 different arenas. These arenas hosted more than 300 curated exhibition pavilions and demonstrations, giving visitors a chance to see real-world AI solutions.
The event also featured 13 country pavilions. Countries participating included Australia, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Serbia, Estonia, Tajikistan, and several nations from Africa. This wide international participation highlighted the global interest in AI and the importance of collaboration.
More than 600 startups took part in the Expo. Many of these startups were showcasing AI-based solutions that are already being used in real life. These innovations aim to improve different sectors such as healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and more.
The Expo was expected to attract over 250,000 visitors. Among these visitors were international delegates, industry leaders, researchers, and students. This diverse group was interested in learning about AI’s latest advancements and future possibilities.
During the event, over 500 sessions were held. These sessions featured more than 3,250 speakers and panel members. Topics discussed included how AI can transform various sectors and contribute to economic growth and social development.
The India AI Impact Summit was held alongside the Expo. It is considered the first international AI summit hosted by India in the Global South. The summit aimed to promote inclusive, impactful, and action-oriented AI through global cooperation.
A key part of the event was the IndiaAI Mission. Under this initiative, the Indian government announced the development of 12 indigenous foundation models. These models are designed to cater to India’s many languages and dialects, supporting local and regional practice in AI technology.
Access to the main Expo arena at Bharat Mandapam was restricted on the first day due to the Prime Minister’s inauguration. Entry was closed to the public initially, but the Expo opened to visitors from February 17 onward. Access to the main hall area was regulated through Gates 4, 7, and 10. Entry from Gate 4 was available between 7:30 am and 2 pm, with arrangements for car and cab drop-offs during this period. After 2 pm, access was restricted following security protocols.
The overall goal of the Expo and Summit was to foster new partnerships and create new business opportunities within the global AI ecosystem. The event aimed to position India as a key player in AI development and to promote international collaboration.
The India AI Impact Summit is seen as the year's leading global forum for AI. Its aim is to encourage the use of AI for positive and inclusive growth. The event underscores India’s ambition to shape a future where AI is responsible, equitable, and beneficial for all.
As of now, there are no official statements about specific outcomes or agreements resulting from the Expo and Summit. However, the event has set the stage for increased dialogue, innovation, and cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence worldwide.
