The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has embarked on a massive Rs 1,000 crore infrastructure overhaul to mark its platinum jubilee. This ambitious project aims to create a more inclusive, healthy, and future-ready campus by upgrading residential, academic, wellness, and recreational facilities.
The transformation focuses on improving the overall student experience, covering living, learning, research, sports, cultural activities, and daily mobility. The initiative is backed by detailed student feedback, ensuring the upgrades meet the needs of the campus community.
Comprehensive Campus Revamp Rooted in Student Needs
The campus transformation is designed around the "full student lifecycle," addressing every aspect of student life. A structured survey collected 1,223 valid responses from undergraduates and postgraduates, providing insights into housing, collaborative spaces, and transport preferences. This data-driven approach ensures that the new facilities align with student expectations and modern campus living standards.
Central to the upgrade is the development of wellness and recreational infrastructure. The upcoming SETU wellness centre will feature over 25 private counselling rooms, group therapy spaces, seminar areas, mood rooms, creative studios, meditation zones, and landscaped therapeutic environments. This facility aims to integrate mental health support visibly into everyday campus life.
Additionally, the CREATE centre will house an indoor sports complex, fitness centre, co-working and technology group spaces, and approximately 4,000 square metres dedicated to cultural and creative activities. The NAVYA student activity plaza, currently under construction and expected to open by November 2026, will offer an amphitheatre, outdoor classrooms, nature trails, cafes, kiosks, and exhibition areas to foster student engagement and creativity.
New Hostels to Accommodate 4,500 Students
Residential infrastructure is the largest component of the Rs 601 crore investment, with five new G+8 phase-II hostels under development. These include three boys' hostels and two girls' hostels, collectively adding space for about 4,500 students. The hostels will feature modern amenities such as dining and kitchen areas, technology rooms, libraries, reading rooms, music rooms, gyms, indoor sports facilities, badminton courts, night canteens, and shops.
Rooms will be equipped with controllable air-conditioning, LAN, Wi-Fi, CCTV, backup power, solar photovoltaic systems, and fire protection. Importantly, 15 rooms will be reserved for differently-abled students, reflecting the institute's commitment to inclusivity.
Academic and Research Facilities Receive Major Boost
The campus upgrade also includes significant additions to academic infrastructure. The Asima Chatterjee academic complex, a G+7 tower spanning roughly 24,850 square metres, is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 135 crore. This building will bring together departments such as mathematics, education, physics, civil engineering, water resources engineering, economics, and several interdisciplinary schools and centres.
Further expansions include a new computer science and engineering annexe covering about 4,800 square metres with a project cost of Rs 45 crore. A recently completed mechanical engineering building of approximately 5,800 square metres was commissioned in January 2026. Moreover, a specialised shallow and deep-water manoeuvring and sea-keeping basin is under construction to support ocean engineering and naval architecture research.
