Development of a Tulip Research and Propagation Hub in Kashmir
The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) is establishing a Centre of Excellence for Tulip and Bulb Production at the Mountain Crop Research Station (MCRS) in Sagam, Anantnag, about 76 km from Srinagar. This center will facilitate advanced research and large-scale growing of tulips suitable for Indian conditions.
Promoting Local Tulip Bulb Production
Scientists at MCRS are working towards cultivating tulips locally to produce high-quality bulbs. The goal is to replace expensive imports with indigenous varieties that are more resilient to climate changes and can produce consistent yields across different regions.
Funding and Infrastructure Support
The project covers an area of 407 kanals and receives a financial boost of ₹8 crore from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The funds are used for land development, building infrastructure, and setting up research facilities. This effort aims to lower import costs and ensure sustainable tulip cultivation in India.
Key Facts for Exams
- Tulips are bulbous flowering plants commonly grown in temperate climates.
- Kashmir’s climate supports floriculture, especially tulip farming.
- NABARD promotes rural infrastructure and agricultural projects across India.
- SKUAST-K is a major agricultural research institute in Jammu and Kashmir.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
This initiative is expected to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s floriculture sector and promote tulip garden tourism, especially in Srinagar. It will generate employment, increase farmers’ income, and help India become a notable player in the global ornamental flower market by fostering region-specific agricultural innovations.
