From Tragedy to Triumph
Payal Nag, born in Balangir district, was a daily-wage labourer's daughter. At age eight, she suffered an electrocution accident that caused the loss of all four limbs. After spending time in an orphanage, she rebuilt her life with immense courage. A viral video of her painting using her mouth highlighted her resilience and adaptability.
Mentorship and Archery Journey
Her entry into archery started when coach Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan spotted her potential and brought her to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Archery Academy in Katra. Despite limited resources, Vedwan coached her with innovative methods. Under his guidance, Payal turned her challenges into strengths to compete at a top level.
Unique Technique and Achievements
Unlike other para archers, Payal developed a special shooting style using a custom prosthetic arm. She stabilizes the bow with this arm, then draws the string using her shoulder and mouth, using a trigger mechanism. This innovative method helped her quickly rise in the sport, making her the first athlete with her condition to compete internationally in archery.
