Jyoti, a 28-year-old PhD scholar from Panjab University's Department of Microbiology, died after being electrocuted on campus on Tuesday. The tragic event occurred as she walked from her hostel to the department using an unpaved pathway that was waterlogged due to recent rainfall. It is believed she came into contact with an electric current from a nearby junction box, leading to her collapse. Despite being rushed to a hospital, doctors declared her dead. Jyoti was a resident of Rewari in Haryana and was pursuing her doctoral studies at the university.
Understanding the Incident and Campus Conditions
The pathway Jyoti used was reportedly unpaved and waterlogged, which may have contributed to the electrocution risk. Electrical junction boxes on campus are expected to be properly maintained and insulated to prevent such accidents. The presence of exposed or faulty electrical equipment near pedestrian routes poses a serious safety hazard. This incident highlights concerns about infrastructure maintenance and safety protocols within the university campus, especially during the monsoon season when waterlogging is common.
