Tamil Nadu Launches All-Women Singappen Special Task Force

Tamil Nadu took a significant step toward enhancing public safety with the launch of the Singappen Special Task Force on June 9, 2026. The event took place at Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, Chennai, marking the state's commitment to protecting women and children.

Formation and Leadership

The creation of this all-women police unit was among the first initiatives signed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after assuming office on May 10, 2026. The task force operates under his direct supervision and is headed by Inspector General of Police K Bhavaneeswari, a senior officer in the Indian police hierarchy.

Structure and Strength

In its initial phase, the Singappen Special Task Force has a sanctioned strength of 36 personnel. This includes one Inspector General of Police, one Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police, four Inspectors, eight Sub-Inspectors, and 20 other ranks. The unit’s team was bolstered in late May 2026 with the deputation of eighteen sub-inspectors, including two officers from the Cyber Crime Wing.

Mission and Operations

The task force’s primary mandate is to ensure the safety of women and children throughout Tamil Nadu. Its responsibilities involve identifying vulnerable areas, enhancing surveillance, conducting regular patrols, and responding swiftly to complaints. Key locations under their watch include bus stands, railway stations, educational institutions, and IT hubs.

Distinctive Uniform and Deployment

To distinguish members of the force, a unique uniform has been introduced specifically for the women police personnel attached to the Singappen Special Task Force. This initiative reflects the state's focus on specialized policing tailored to the needs of women and children.

Context: Police Organisation in India

Police functions fall under the jurisdiction of individual states as per the Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The Indian police system features ranks such as Inspector General of Police, Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inspector, and Sub-Inspector, all of which are represented within the Singappen Special Task Force.
