The elections held in Maharashtra have recently concluded, revealing the political preferences of the people in the state. These elections took place on February 7, 2026, covering multiple local bodies including Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis. The results have attracted attention because of the notable performance of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which has won a large number of seats across Maharashtra. In these elections, the Mahayuti alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, secured a commanding victory. The alliance won 552 out of a total of 731 Zilla Parishad seats in the state. It was a clear sign of strong support for this coalition among voters. The BJP itself gained 225 seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party won 165 seats, and the Shiv Sena obtained 162 seats. These results indicate that the alliance was successful in securing a broad base of support. In contrast, the opposition coalition, known as the Maha Vikas Aghadi, or MVA, won 55 seats. The Congress party led this group with 55 seats as well. The Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, received 43 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP secured 26 seats. Overall, the opposition's share was significantly smaller than that of the winning coalition. Other parties participated in the elections as well. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, or MNS, managed to win one seat in Latur and one in Ratnagiri. Additionally, independent candidates won 20 seats. Parties recognized outside the state but registered with the State Election Commission (SEC) won a total of 14 seats. Furthermore, parties recognized outside Maharashtra but registered with the SEC secured seven seats. Looking at the results across different regions, the BJP demonstrated remarkable success in the Zilla Parishad elections for many districts. For example, in Pune district, the BJP won 51 of the 73 seats available in the Pune Zilla Parishad. In the Raigad district, the Shiv Sena, part of the Mahayuti alliance, won 23 out of 59 seats, while in Ratnagiri, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena secured 41 of 56 seats. The BJP was the single largest party in several districts, including Satara, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, Dharashiv, and Latur. This indicates widespread support for the party across various regions. In some districts, other parties led the counts. For example, the Congress emerged as the single largest party in Kolhapur. In the Panchayat Samiti elections, which involve smaller administrative units, the results also favored the BJP. The BJP won 459 of the 1,462 seats across 125 Panchayat Samitis. The NCP secured 306 seats, and the Shiv Sena obtained 302 seats. The Congress won 97 seats, while other parties and independents also gained representation. According to official results, the NCP was successful in the Pune district, winning 51 out of 73 seats in the Pune Zilla Parishad. These results highlight the shifting political landscape at the local level in Maharashtra. As of now, the results for 24 seats in Karad are still not officially confirmed. The elections, which took place two days prior, are under review for these remaining seats. These elections are seen as an important reflection of voter sentiment in Maharashtra. The strong performance of the BJP-led alliance demonstrates the broad support for its candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for their support, calling the victory a positive sign for the alliance. Overall, the recent local elections in Maharashtra show the current political strength of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which has secured a majority of seats across various local bodies.
