Odisha to Develop National UAV Test and Innovation Corridor
Odisha is making significant progress in the field of drone technology and advanced mobility. The state plans to establish a dedicated UAV testing zone to promote research, development, and manufacturing. These efforts aim to position Odisha as a leader in drone and aviation technology in India.
Odisha is taking steps to develop a special area for testing and developing drones and related technologies. This effort is part of the state's broader plan to boost its aerospace and innovation sectors. The goal is to create a hub where companies and researchers can work on new drone technologies and improve existing ones.
In early 2026, Odisha announced plans to set up the National UAV Test and Innovation Corridor at Rangeilunda. This project is designed to support the growth of India's drone industry and advanced mobility ecosystem. The corridor will serve as a dedicated space for testing, training, and developing unmanned aerial vehicles.
The plan was made official in January 2026 during Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad. At that event, Odisha signed an agreement with BonV Aero to help develop the UAV corridor at Rangeilunda. This partnership aims to bring together expertise and resources to create a state-of-the-art testing facility.
The Odisha government has been proactive in planning this initiative since at least October 2025. At that time, officials announced a plan to establish a UAV testing, training, and promotional facility at Rangeilunda airport, located in Ganjam district. This facility will support the testing of drone technology and provide training for professionals.
Earlier in July 2025, the government approved investment proposals aimed at creating an integrated UAV ecosystem. These proposals included setting up a drone park in Khurda, which will accommodate research and development, manufacturing, and training related to drones.
Odisha has also been active in the defense sector. In January 2025, a local startup called IG Drones received a contract from the Indian Army. The company produces indigenous VTOL and FPV drones, contributing to India's goal of self-reliance in defense technology.
Beyond drones, Odisha is also developing a broader innovation ecosystem. In August 2025, the state launched the Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research & Innovation Corridor (OMBRIC). This project aims to unlock marine bio-resources and position Odisha as a global leader in marine biotechnology, supporting the Blue Economy.

In July 2025, the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that there was no formal proposal for a drone corridor in Odisha for disaster management. No feasibility studies have been conducted to create such a corridor in the state.
In addition, Odisha is working to become a leader in the aviation industry through infrastructure development. Since January 2025, the state has been consulting to develop Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. These facilities are essential for maintaining aircraft and drones, supporting industry growth.
The Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC) has also invited applications from firms interested in providing UAV imaging services within the state. This initiative aims to enhance the use of drone technology in various applications, from land surveys to environmental monitoring.
