Violence in Ukhrul District of Manipur Leads to Curfew and Internet Shutdown

There was a violent incident in Ukhrul district, located in the state of Manipur, India, on February 10, 2026. The incident involved clashes between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, which are two different groups living in the area. This violence was triggered by allegations that a man from the Tangkhul Naga community was assaulted by a group of Kuki men during the night. The Foothills Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC) claimed that around 30 youths from the Vaiphei community attacked a village called K Lungwiram Naga in a nearby district. The attack reportedly involved setting fire to a house there. Meanwhile, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) expressed concern over possible retaliations that could lead to more communal conflict. To promote peace, the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) appealed to both communities to avoid violence and focus on harmony and development. The Deputy Chief Minister of the region, Losii Dikho, said that only a few individuals were responsible for the violence, and both communities wanted peace. He assured that the government would arrest those involved and bring them to justice. The Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, also called on residents to maintain peace. Additionally, the village authority of Litan Sareikhong appealed for restraint, emphasizing that the initial altercation was caused by intoxicated individuals and should not be viewed as a communal conflict.
